Patrick McCaw, a 6-foot-7 wing known for his impressive title runs, has made his mark in the NBA, particularly during his time with the Golden State Warriors. Despite being out of the league since 2021, McCaw’s three consecutive championship victories between 2016 and 2019 have solidified his place in basketball history.
Initially selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 38th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, McCaw’s journey began with a trade to the Golden State Warriors on the same night. Joining the famed Warriors dynasty, he quickly immersed himself in the franchise’s winning culture under the mentorship of seasoned stars.
During his rookie year, Patrick McCaw learned a valuable lesson about the Warriors’ high standards. On a road trip, Draymond Green tasked him with fetching beignets in New Orleans. However, McCaw forgot about the request, resulting in a memorable prank by Green and other veterans who doused him with buckets of water in his hotel room. This experience left a lasting impression on McCaw, ensuring he never neglected his responsibilities again.
McCaw thrived in his first two NBA seasons, winning back-to-back championships with the Warriors. Despite playing alongside superstars like Kevin Durant, he even started in 33 games, including three during the 2017 postseason. Throughout his tenure with Golden State, McCaw contributed an average of 3.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 199 appearances, while playing an average of 16.9 minutes.
After a challenging sophomore year, Patrick McCaw decided to seek a larger role on another team. He declined to return to the Warriors, sat out a portion of the 2018-19 season, and eventually signed a non-guaranteed two-year, $6 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in December. However, his time in Cleveland was short-lived as he was waived just a week later.
McCaw’s fortunes changed when he joined the Toronto Raptors later that season. The Raptors went on to secure the NBA championship, making McCaw the first player since the three-peat Los Angeles Lakers, featuring Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, to win three consecutive titles.
Despite his successful championship runs, McCaw’s role became increasingly limited during his two seasons with the Raptors, leading to his release in April 2021. Since then, he has not played in the NBA.
To stay active in basketball, McCaw participated in the FIBA AmeriCup with Team USA and joined the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League in February 2022. While primarily coming off the bench for the Blue Coats, McCaw has continued to showcase his skills, averaging 22.2 minutes, 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game during the 2022-23 season.
In a recent triumph, McCaw helped lead the Delaware Blue Coats to their first-ever championship. This accomplishment reinforces his reputation as a player with a winning mentality, even as he works towards making a potential NBA comeback.
