Mark Your Calendars: MLB Trade Deadline 2023

The MLB trade deadline for this year is set at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 1. It marks the final moment for teams to finalize and submit their deals to the commissioner’s office.

Late Monday Trade: Diamondbacks and A’s Strike a Deal

In a late Monday trade, the Oakland Athletics agreed to send infielder Jace Peterson, along with cash considerations, to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In exchange, the Diamondbacks are parting ways with minor league right-handed pitcher Chad Patrick. USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reported on this transaction.

Jace Peterson, a seasoned 10-year veteran, will fill the utility role for the Diamondbacks, particularly replacing Josh Rojas, who has been sent down to the minor leagues. Before this season, Peterson inked a two-year contract worth $9.5 million.

The outfielder has showcased his skills with a .221 batting average, 28 RBI, and six home runs throughout this season. On the other hand, Chad Patrick was a fourth-round pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2021 draft, hailing from Purdue Northwest. He has shown potential, maintaining a 4-7 record with a 4.71 ERA in 19 starts for the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles this season.

Red Sox Stand Firm on Alex Verdugo

Amidst interest from several teams, the Boston Red Sox have made it clear that they are not looking to trade their outfielder, Alex Verdugo. USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reported on the Red Sox’s stance. Despite inquiries from other teams, Boston is committed to retaining Verdugo at least until the end of this season. After 2024, Verdugo will enter free agency.

The outfielder has been an integral part of the Red Sox for four seasons, initially drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014. He boasts a respectable .272 batting average, contributing 39 RBI and seven home runs to the team’s performance. As of now, Boston is placed fourth in the AL East and fourth in the wild-card standings.

Mets Engage in Talks for Justin Verlander

The New York Mets are currently in discussions with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros regarding a potential trade for ace pitcher Justin Verlander. According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale, despite Verlander’s no-trade clause, talks with the Astros have intensified in the past 24 hours.

The Dodgers, who made an offer for Verlander last season, have also been linked to the pitcher in recent days. However, his contract poses a significant hurdle in negotiations. The Mets have expressed their willingness to part ways with Verlander, signaling their openness to explore other options.

The MLB trade deadline 2023 promises to be an eventful one, with teams vying for crucial acquisitions and securing key players to bolster their roster for the remainder of the season. Stay tuned to USA TODAY Sports for up-to-the-minute updates and in-depth analysis as the deadline draws near.
