Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s weekly press conference took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when he experienced a momentary freeze, gripping the podium and appearing unable to continue for over 30 seconds. Senator John Barrasso, a physician and the third-ranking Republican, walked with McConnell near the Senate floor, and other leaders resumed the press conference.
After a brief pause, McConnell returned to the conference and assured reporters that he was fine and capable of carrying out his duties. When questioned about the incident’s relation to his health issues from an earlier fall this year, which resulted in a concussion, he dismissed concerns, reiterating that he was in good condition.
Later, McConnell shared that President Biden, his former Senate colleague, had reached out to inquire about his well-being. Humorously referring to Biden’s own fall at the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation, where he tripped on a sandbag, McConnell said, “I told him I got sand-bagged.” When asked about his current state of health, he once again affirmed that he was fine.
Senator Barrasso emphasized to reporters that McConnell came back to address the press and even answered more questions than usual, easing any concerns about his health.
In March, the 81-year-old Kentucky Republican experienced a fall at a Washington event with GOP donors, leading to hospitalization for a concussion. Although he was treated and discharged after five days, Mitch McConnell has faced other health issues in the past. He walks with a limp due to having contracted polio as a child, a topic he has spoken openly about, sharing his experience with the disease before the polio vaccine was available. In 2018, he used his personal battle as motivation to fight polio globally and discussed his struggle in his 2016 memoir, “The Long Game.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was asked about McConnell’s recent incident and any potential concerns about his health. In response, Schumer offered well wishes, stating, “I always wish Leader McConnell well.”
As the longest-serving party leader in the Senate’s history, having first been elected in 1984, Mitch McConnell is up for re-election in 2026. However, he has not made any official announcements regarding whether he will seek an eighth term. When questioned about a potential successor after he steps down as GOP leader, McConnell playfully laughed and left without providing a response.
