In a recent top-10 ranking by ESPN, which gathered input from NFL executives, coaches, and players, Chiefs running backs Jerick McKinnon and Isiah Pacheco didn’t receive a single vote. Interestingly, the cornerback position faced a similar omission from ESPN’s top-10 rankings but did manage to secure a few votes. Surprisingly, the reigning Super Bowl champions’ running back room didn’t even receive an honorable mention.
Isiah Pacheco, despite starting only 11 regular season games, finished the 2022 NFL season ranked 25th in rushing yards with an impressive total of 830 yards. Among rookies, Pacheco had the second-most rushing touchdowns, trailing only Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III. Additionally, if we factor in Pacheco’s playoff yardage, he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark last season, all while also serving as the starting kick returner.
Jerick McKinnon’s role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense is equally significant. He played a crucial part in pass protection schemes during the previous season, often staying in the backfield to shield Patrick Mahomes. McKinnon concluded the year with over 800 yards from scrimmage and a remarkable 10 total touchdowns. His contributions in the passing game were unparalleled among running backs in 2022.
During the offseason, KC Sports Network highlighted an intriguing statistic: McKinnon had more receiving touchdowns than some of the league’s top wide receivers, including the talented Justin Jefferson of the Vikings and former Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill.
While the running game may not be the primary focus for the Chiefs during the Patrick Mahomes era, it is becoming increasingly evident that McKinnon and Pacheco deserve greater recognition as we enter the new year.
