The latest vehicle recalls, posted in the last week to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, include loose steering wheels, faulty airbags, short-circuited sensors and other issues. A total of 347,240 vehicles are affected, including models by Kia, Hyundai, Toyota and Nissan.

Kia K5 airbag recall
Kia is recalling 188,912 of its newer K5 sedans over a potential issue that causes the side curtain airbags to deploy improperly, according to an NHTSA recall report.
“The side curtain airbag(s) may have been installed improperly during vehicle assembly at the Kia Georgia plant. As a result, the side curtain airbag(s) may not deploy properly in a crash sufficient to warrant such a deployment,” the report said. “An improper deployment of the side curtain airbag(s) increases the risk of injury in a crash.”
Vehicles recalled:
Kia dealers will offer free inspections and, if necessary, airbag re-installations, the manufacturer said. Owners can expect recall notifications by mail (or starting?) April 7.
Toyota Tundra truck bed cover recall
The tonneau cover on 130,266 Toyota Tundra trucks could detach while driving and become a road hazard, according to an NHTSA report.
Toyota said some of the recalled vehicles could be equipped with covers that are attached in part by a joint at the front end of the truck bed.
“Due to the design of the joint, there is a possibility that the axial force at the joint could become insufficient to retain the cover,” the report said. “In this condition, the tonneau cover may detach from the vehicle bed while driving.”
Recalled vehicles:
Owners will be notified of the recall beginning March 31 through May 02. Toyota said it was still devising a remedy for the recall, and planned to ask owners to remove the covers in its initial recall notification, before offering a remedy in a subsequent notification.
Nissan steering wheels may fall off
The steering wheel on over 1,000 Nissan Ariya vehicles may come off, according to an NHTSA report.
Nissan said in the report that a certain number of Ariya cars recently had their steering wheels replaced because of a quality issue. During the replacement process, the steering wheel could have been improperly installed, Nissan said.
“In certain cases, the steering wheel bolt may not have been installed,” the report said. “As a result, the steering wheel may experience some play or potentially separate from the steering column if pulled towards the driver.”
A detached steering wheel could increase the risk of a crash. Nissan said it was not aware of any injury or accident related to the recall.

Beginning March 30, Nissan will notify impacted owners and ask them to take their vehicle to a dealer for a free repair. The car maker also said it issued a “Stop Sale” order on the vehicles.
Hyundai Veloster fire risk
Hyundai is recalling 26,169 Veloster hatchback vehicles because the parking sensor can short circuit and cause a fire, according to an NHTSA report. The recalled vehicle comes with a Reverse Park Aid Sensor that can short circuit “due to ingression of high conductive liquid,” the report said.
If the transmission shifter becomes stuck in park or if the reverse parking assist function stops working, there could be a short circuit in the sensor, Hyundai said.

“All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for replacement of the RPAS fuse and sensor, if necessary,” the report said. Owners were expected to be notified on April 29.
Hyundai said it had received five reports of fires related to the issue between 2013 and 2020. No injuries were reported, Hyundai said.
Land Rover Defender seat issue
Jaguar Land Rover is recalling hundreds of new Land Rover Defender 130 vehicles because of a potential issue with a latch in the third row seats, an NHTSA recall report said.
“An incorrect specification seat back latch component may result in the seat back not latching properly,” the report said. A child’s seat attached to a seat with a faulty back latch component “will compromise seat strength,” according to the report.
“In case of a frontal crash of sufficient severity, the seat back deflects more than it should and therefore the child seat occupant is exposed to an increased risk of injury,” the report said.

Jaguar Land Rover said it was not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the recall. Owners are expected to be notified April 28 with instructions to take their vehicle to an authorized repair shop, where they will replace the seat assemblies, if necessary.
Ford recalls F-150 Lightning EV trucks
Ford is recalling 18 of its flagship electric vehicles, the F-150 Lightning, over a fire risk.
A battery cell manufacturing defect occurred over a four-week period starting at the end of last year, Ford spokesperson Emma Bergg told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.
“During a standard quality check, one vehicle displayed a battery issue and caught fire. The root cause identified was related to battery cell production at the SK On plant in Georgia,” she said.
Ford identified 18 trucks from the affected production period that made it to dealers and customers.
