Hurricane Calvin, currently located in the Eastern Pacific, is expected to weaken as it approaches Hawaii. The National Hurricane Centre reports that Calvin is quickly strengthening, with sustained winds reaching approximately 100 mph. While the storm is moving towards Hawaii at a speed of 15 mph in a west to west-north-westward motion, it is still over 2,000 miles away from Hilo. At present, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Forecasters anticipate that Calvin will gradually weaken over the weekend as it encounters cooler waters. The hurricane is projected to strengthen further before reaching the Hawaiian Islands, but the NHC predicts a weakening trend as it moves into less favourable environmental conditions.

While uncertainty surrounds the potential impacts of Hurricane Calvin on Hawaii, it is advisable for residents to prepare in advance. The National Weather Service advises individuals to ensure they have a 14-day emergency supply of food, water, and medication, as tropical storms can bring significant rain and wind. The city is also taking precautions and monitoring the storm’s progress.

Hurricane Calvin is forecasted to weaken as it approaches Hawaii, although there is currently no imminent threat to the islands. According to the National Hurricane Centre, Calvin is rapidly strengthening, with sustained winds of approximately 100 mph. The hurricane’s sustained winds have increased throughout the day, and additional strengthening is expected in the next 24 hours. Despite its progress, Calvin is still over 2,000 miles away from Hilo and moving at a speed of 15 mph in a west to west-north-westward direction.

At present, no coastal watches or warnings are in effect. However, as Calvin reaches cooler waters during the weekend, the NHC predicts a gradual weakening of the storm. While Calvin continues to strengthen in the East Pacific, meteorologists anticipate its power to diminish as it encounters cooler waters while heading towards the Hawaiian Islands.

As of 11 a.m., Hurricane Calvin was situated about 905 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. The hurricane’s sustained winds were measured at 80 mph, and it was moving west at 14 mph, with a west-to-west-north-westward trajectory expected in the coming days. Hurricane-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the centre, while tropical-storm-force winds reach up to 80 miles.

By 5 a.m., Calvin had reached hurricane status in the East Pacific, positioned approximately 2,555 miles east-southeast of Hilo. It boasted maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, moving west at 13 mph. The NHC predicted further strengthening within the next day, followed by gradual weakening over the weekend.

Calvin represents the third hurricane of the East Pacific season, and as of 6 p.m., it appeared to be on the verge of entering the Central Pacific region. While the storm was classified as a Category 2 hurricane, the likelihood of it hitting Hawaii in that state was low. Calvin was approximately 960 miles southwest of the tip of Baja California and 2,325 miles east-southeast of Hilo, with sustained winds of 100 mph and higher gusts.

No coastal watches or warnings were issued at the time, but the projected cone indicated that Calvin might approach the south-eastern region of the Big Island by early afternoon on July 18 as a tropical storm. The exact impact of the storm on Hawaii remains uncertain, necessitating preparedness.

The westward motion of Calvin is expected to persist, driven by a strong mid-level ridge centred over the southwestern United States. While additional strengthening is anticipated over the next 24 hours, the hurricane will gradually weaken as it encounters cooler waters and increased vertical wind shear.

Although forecasters predict Calvin will weaken as it nears Hawaii, it is important to prepare for the potential impacts of tropical storms, which can bring heavy rain and strong winds. To avoid last-minute rushes, officials encourage people to check their hurricane kits, ensuring they have a 14-day emergency supply of food, water, and medication. It is also advised to have insurance paperwork readily available in case of damage caused by hurricane-force winds.
