The Steam Deck has become the ultimate portable gaming device, and for RPG fans, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the game to play on it. Developed by Larian Studios, this long-awaited entry in the Baldur’s Gate series is based on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons pen-and-paper RPG.

In the game, your character and their companions have been captured by mind flayers and implanted with parasites in their brains. The group must now work together to remove these creatures before they turn into mind flayers themselves. The gameplay uses turn-based combat, with characters using weapons, magic, and other skills.

What sets Baldur’s Gate 3 apart is the plethora of choices available to players. The game incorporates a 20-sided die to mimic the randomness of a Dungeons & Dragons game. Decisions like intimidation, exploration, and even animal interactions are all determined by dice rolls, adding excitement and uncertainty to the experience. Each choice can have a significant impact on the game’s storyline, with over a thousand possible endings, providing immense replay value.

The game world is vast, with many hidden surprises and interesting characters to encounter. Players can choose to help or ignore them, and even take an evil path by stealing from or killing characters. The visuals are stylish and detailed, making for a visually stunning experience on the Steam Deck.

Playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Steam Deck may require some tweaking of display settings to balance performance and graphics quality. Keeping the frame rate at 30 FPS, reducing the resolution, and adjusting the overall quality preset to medium can ensure smooth gameplay while showcasing the game’s beautiful graphics. The Steam Deck’s fans may become active to keep the device cool during play, but these settings should provide about two hours of gameplay.

While the game had a minor issue launching on the Steam Deck during the review, it’s expected that this will be resolved upon the official release.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to launch on Steam, followed by a release on PS5 in September and eventually on Xbox Series X|S. With its rich storytelling, intricate choices, and engaging gameplay, Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out as the most in-depth and enjoyable RPG to play on the Steam Deck.
