A Massachusetts State Police report confirms that a 4-year-old girl, Cortana Goncalves, who was abducted by her non-custodial biological mother in Springfield, has been located safely.
The incident led to the activation of an Amber Alert to aid in her recovery.
The state police announced that Cortana Goncalves was taken by Brandee Arnold, aged 32, on Thursday morning. Thankfully, Cortana was found unharmed shortly before noon in a trailer at a trailer park situated on Fifth Avenue in Cheshire, which is located in the northwest region of Massachusetts.
Providing an update on the situation, state police tweeted, “Cortana Goncalves has been located; she is safe. She was found in Cheshire, Mass.” Brandee Arnold has been taken into custody and will be handed over to the Springfield police, who hold jurisdiction over the kidnapping case.

According to state police, Brandee Arnold violated the custody agreement by taking Cortana from a family gathering earlier that morning. The police expressed urgent concern for the child’s safety and well-being, as Arnold had previously made both suicidal and homicidal statements.
Amber Alerts are put into action when certain conditions are met. These conditions include law enforcement’s assessment that the child is in immediate risk of severe physical harm or death. Additionally, there must be sufficient descriptive details available regarding the victim, suspected abductor, and the specifics of the abduction for law enforcement to issue the alert. Lastly, the abducted individual must be a child aged 17 years or younger.
