Tonight President Trump said trade talks between the White House in Canada or the president of pulling the plug on the president of our top buyer of goods are angry about the president of Canada’s new digital services tax which you referred to as a direct and blatant attack there. He wrote that the United States will be telling Canada that they will pay to do business with the United States within the next seven days. You can see here how the three major stock exchanges reacted to the president’s post in real time. The suspicion is briefly dropped, but look at that it’s not just a sharp reversal, but a bad one. By taxing Canadians, but I would also imagine that Canadians probably want to protect their own sloppy technology sector. I would have liked Canadians to partner with us and buy chips from Nvidia versus chips from Hawaii and Chinese and so these are some of the global things that I’m thinking about so I would probably go back to the conversation if I were to suggest to the president, but they didn’t and they talked so it’s interesting. He seems to have a decent relationship with the new prime minister, but let me take the opposite argument. But the problem is we’re supposed to have these 90 deals and 90 days. I think they’ve got about two. So the problem is the context we find ourselves in. Yes, you want an American president to fight that fight but as we’ve seen the volatility in the markets, the lack of consumer confidence, I mean, you know, the anxiety that people are feeling is not going to go away and if we hear from the president, which I hope we will early next week. Once that’s done, we’re going to continue to see which countries have a deal with the administration closer to the ground. We’ve made a deal with China, can’t do that. So one we’ve talked to a lot of countries and we’re just going to tell him what they have to pay to do business with you in the United States and it’s going to go very quickly. Maybe a stupid question because that’s the way he is. That’s how he works on this and people around him say it works you believe. What do you personally want to do with it? I think the president is very sensitive to the ups and downs of the market. He obviously cares a lot about it. I actually think John though that that’s probably a good approach and I said it about a month ago that I would like the president to go to multiple countries and say hey, this is a baseline for the United States on trade. That’s all just agreeing and trying to find that many countries that I actually support the effort to say. Hey let’s go to everyone and say this is our baseline number. Let’s agree and move forward with the trade that was done in 90 and we knew when they said it. It wasn’t going to happen. And here we are and he says they got four or five and now he’s saying oh, well, really. That’s a lot of you. A big challenge is we see which data points have conflicting data points. Which one do we think is important going into the election? You’re a Democrat here. Yes, but the president was against Iran
Said today is a good week for the president after some records that Republicans got nervous about the midterm climate because obviously today this announcement from the president to the Supreme Court. He’s feeling brave and yet I was seeing the average of real clean politics that we’ve seen in a few weeks. Not just an outburst a few weeks of his foreign policy underwater Quinnipiac Pool showed this week that people are saying they don’t like the Marines being in California. They don’t like the National Guard. They want a path to citizenship for those who come here. So the problem he has and the opportunity that Democrats have is to give a different perspective and raise the issue. It’s not just a check on power, but like let’s make sure we get it because one of the things that we’re seeing is people are not happy with the way it’s going and he never talks about the economy, immediately ending trade talks with Canada and announcing a new tariff on the top buyer of American goods, Canada and the White House in the coming days. Why is President Trump suddenly ending direct talks? Jack I mean basically decided to move forward with a digital tax on American companies that will go into effect on June 30th. Friday but it turns out it just got on President Trump’s radar and actually these digital giants will have to pay this tax too, they actually have to pay a retroactive tax too. So they’re going to owe billions of dollars when it comes time on June 30th. So that’s clearly been brought to President Trump‘s attention. They were stupid to do that. And so I said we’re going to stop all talks with Canada until they get their act together. We have all the cards, you know
