Blake Shelton may be the king of “The Voice,” but Kelly Clarkson is its reigning queen.
Clarkson was determined to nab singer Cait Martin during the fifth round of blind auditions Monday night, spinning around in her chair before coaches Shelton, Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper followed suit. The 32-year-old singer brought the house down with her torch song rendition of “As It Was” by Harry Styles.
“I was blown away,” Horan said. “You just kept so much control in the highest parts and had so many dynamics and beautiful moments in the song, and I would love you to be a member of Team Niall.”
But Clarkson was quick to point out her swift chair turn for Martin. “I literally believed in you light years before these guys turned around,” she said. “I don’t know why it took them so long.”
Clarkson’s speediness worked in her favor, with Martin choosing Clarkson as her coach.
“Today has been a rollercoaster, but like always, mama came out victorious,” Clarkson said. “I’m so glad I turned around quickly because I had to fight for her.”

Texas singer Kylee Dayne dazzled with her soulful cover of “Fallingwater” by Maggie Rogers, earning chair turns from Shelton, Horan and Chance.
“I thought the performance was amazing,” Chance said. “I feel like you are a textbook definition of a star. You’re just somebody that, to me, seems a little eclectic and different.”
Shelton was ready to pull out all the stops to win over the 19-year-old. The country music superstar pushed his button during his pitch to Dayne, which lowered an enlarged red foam finger from the ceiling that read “pick Blake” – a nod to Shelton’s tactic of pointing to the top of his head while a singer decides their coach.
“Niall is already stealing my finger thing and it’s worked for him a few times, but I just want everybody here to know that there’s only one king of ‘The Voice,’” Shelton said. “And I only get to use that gag one time this season, and I chose to use it on you.”
The power of Shelton’s finger still holds strong, with Dayne opting to join Team Blake.
“I wasn’t going to settle for no,” Shelton said. “So, I had to pull out the big finger.”

Teen vocalist Gina Miles impressed Clarkson and Horan with her unique tone and tender performance of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.”
“I’m a really big fan of your voice,” Clarkson told the 18-year-old. “Obviously, I’ve been doing pop music for 20 years, so I’m all right at it, and I feel like we would work really well together.”
Horan was also gunning for Miles, but still gave props to his fellow coach. “Kelly’s one of the best singers of the last 10 generations,” he said. “Whoever you pick, you’re in great hands.”
“This has truly been a battle to the death,” Shelton said sarcastically, poking fun at Horan’s cordial pitch. “The gloves have really come off on this one.”

Shelton even attempted to help Horan, passing him a note airing out Clarkson’s shortcomings as a coach. “Kelly can’t coach nerves,” Horan read.
Lucky for Horan, nice guys don’t always finish last, as Miles chose Team Niall.
“I don’t know if in Ireland it’s common practice to be passed a note about somebody and then read the note aloud to the person,” Shelton said. “That is the last time I’m helping that kid out.”

Singer JB Somers scored double chair turns from Clarkson and Chance with his emotional performance of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.”
“When I turned around, it was even more beautiful to watch you perform it. You just exude so much empathy and emotion,” Clarkson said. “You’re going to make it to the finale regardless of which team you’re choosing.”
In an effort to connect with Somers, Chance name-dropped a famous friend who also reimagined the ‘70s folk tune.
“One of my very good friends covered that same Joni Mitchell song, and his initials are J.B.,” Chance said, referencing singer-songwriter James Blake. “I’d love to give you the platform to be able to just be you on TV.”

While the 31-year-old appeared swayed by Chance’s “young blood” as a freshman coach, Clarkson wasn’t through. “I’ve been turned down, and I’m still going ‘cause that’s how much I believe you,” she said. “I do not get defeated. I keep going.”
Clarkson’s persistence paid off, with Somers choosing Team Kelly.
“I wanted JB so badly, and I got him and I’m so stoked,” Clarkson said, adding he has “the possibility to not only be in the finale, but win this show.”
