With late winter weather sweeping through the Northeast U.S. Tuesday, air travel has been a little hairy.
According to data from the flight-tracking website FlightAware, more than 1,100 U.S. flights were canceled and more than 4,300 were delayed just after 5:30 p.m. ET.
As with most major weather systems, airlines responded by offering additional flexibility to travelers whose flights may be affected.
Typically, these waivers allow travelers to cancel or rebook their flights without paying extra fees or fare differences for a set number of days until the weather is no longer a factor.
The Department of Transportation has a series of dashboards to help travelers see what they’re entitled to in the event their flight is canceled or delayed. In most cases, a cancelled flight allows you to get a full refund, but delay compensation is a little less strict from a regulatory standpoint.

Airline waivers for Tuesday, March 14
The following airlines are offering waivers in response to the current storms.
- American Airlines: For select Northeast U.S. and Canadian airports, flights on March 14 and 15 can be rebooked through March 20.
- Delta Air Lines: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked through March 18.
- United Airlines: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked through March 20.
- Southwest Airlines: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked for up to 14 days.
- JetBlue: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked through March 18.
- Spirit Airlines: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked through March 20.
- Frontier Airlines: For select Northeast U.S. airports, flights on March 14 or 15 can be rebooked.
