Host pokes fun at female directors snub

Girl power behind the camera is a hot topic at the Oscars.

Jimmy Kimmel, host of the 95th Academy Awards, took aim at the absence of female filmmakers in the ceremony’s best director category Sunday night.

Kimmel highlighted the snub while poking fun at “Avatar: The Way of Water” director James Cameron being a no-show at the Oscars.

“Some of the cynics are saying (James) Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a best director nomination,” Kimmel said. “While I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility,” he joked, “he does have a point. How does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed ‘Avatar’? What do they think he is, a woman?”

Kimmel wasn’t the only one griping about the lack of Oscars recognition for female directors. During an appearance at the Charles Finch and Chanel pre-Oscars dinner Saturday, “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins opened up to Variety about her frustration.

“I give up; I give up,” Jenkins told the outlet. “I say that even with all of their push to have diversity. The numbers are just hugely imbalanced of who votes for these things. I sort of just stopped paying attention to it.”

Jenkins said while she appreciates the Academy’s efforts to improve diversity, “it’s still going to take a long ways to go.”

“It’s going to take a lot more to really see truly more diverse awards,” Jenkins added.

Men were the exclusive nominees in the best director category at this year’s Academy Awards, with directors Todd Field (“Tár”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Ruben Östlund (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”) receiving recognition for their recent work.
