The beginning of spring won’t mean much for many Americans, as more than 50 million were under freeze warnings in the Southeast Monday morning, while California will once again see rain and snow that will spread to other parts of the West Coast.
It was a relatively quiet weekend on the West Coast after another atmospheric river storm hit California last week, which brought more rain and extended flood watches throughout the Golden State.
The state already began seeing the effects of one storm Sunday, and a second one later in the week will likely have the characteristics of an atmospheric river, said AccuWeather meteorologist Mary Gilbert.

More rain, snow hit California; will reach Rocky Mountains
A winter storm warning was in effect in parts of Northern California Monday as the region began to receive additional heavy snow, with total snow accumulations of 1- to-3-feet in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The winter storm watch remains in affect through Monday morning, as it will move towards the Rocky Mountains by Monday night.
“Moisture associated with this storm system will spill into the Great Basin and the Rockies on Monday, resulting in periods of mountain snow and valley rain showers,” the National Weather Service said. “Snowfall totals are forecast to surpass a foot in the higher elevations of the Great Basin, the Wasatch, and the western Colorado Rockies.”
56 million under freeze warnings amid ‘chilly’ start to spring for much of US
The beginning of spring won’t mean higher temperatures throughout the country, as AccuWeather says there will be milder temperatures as a whole to begin the week before temperatures start to rise.
Nearly all of the Southeast was under freeze warnings Monday morning, as the NWS notices stretched from east Texas to the North Carolina coast. Roughly 56 million Americans were under the warnings as of 6:10 a.m. ET, per NWS.
“Cold high pressure system will keep much of the East and South chilly through Monday,” the NWS said.
Some of the freeze warnings were set to end Monday morning, though expiration times varied by location.

- New York City: 54 degrees
- Chicago: 49 degrees
- Los Angeles: 62 degrees
- Phoenix: 72 degrees
- Houston: 58 degrees
- Washington D.C.: 54 degrees
- Miami: 74 degrees with showers
- New Orleans: 55 degrees
- Indianapolis: 51 degrees
- Kansas City, Missouri: 61 degrees
- Philadelphia: 54 degrees
